Heat Health Alert

23rd June 2026

Dear Parents / Carers

I am writing to update you on the current Red Alert for extreme heat issued nationally.

A red alert indicates a significant risk to life, even for healthy individuals, and we want to ensure you have clear information about how this affects school over the coming days.

At present, we intend to remain open tomorrow and Thursday. However, it is important not to overlook the seriousness of the alert.

The official guidance highlights the following risks:

    • Increased risk to life across the whole population, with particularly significant impacts on older people
    • Severe pressure on health and social care services due to the extreme temperatures
    • The heat affecting the ability of the workforce to deliver services safely and effectively

We fully understand that some parents and carers may decide to keep their child at home during this period. Any absences related to the heat will be authorised.

For those pupils attending school, we have put additional measures in place to help manage the heat. In some areas there has been little impact on the temperature,  therefore routines have been changed to find cooler spaces.

Please be reminded that our building is not air conditioned in any area, and temperatures are expected to continue rising. We will remain open and will manage the heat in the safest and most appropriate way for all pupils who attend.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support during this challenging weather. Please also note that your children have been amazing: as have the staff who have sprayed, wafted, splashed and blown all day.

Yours sincerely,

Sarah Pickering
