Maths

Intent

The aim of our maths curriculum is to provide our pupils with a foundation for understanding number, reasoning, thinking logically and problem solving, with resilience so that they are fully prepared for their best future.

Our approach aims to foster a positive mind set in relation to learning and logical problem solving skills. The subject should be a source of interest and enjoyment, not anxiety or boredom.

The Mill Water maths curriculum aims to equip pupils to:

    • Understand and use mathematical language and notation
    • Use practical, mental, written and calculator skills with fluency, accuracy and efficiency
    • Develop an awareness of time and apply to real life
    • Develop an understanding of the value of money and apply to real life
    • Understand numerical data presented in different forms
    • Use measures in everyday activities
    • Develop an understanding of position and direction

Implementation

We use a range of motivating and meaningful resources to ensure that learning is remembered and our pupils are able to recall it. We develop our pupils’ memory and recall skills using Rosenshine’s 10 Principles of Instruction.

Pupils access 4 discrete maths sessions a week. This includes number, place value and two different shape, space and measure topics. This ensures our pupils revisit their learning regularly and remember more for longer.

We follow a sequential and adapted version of the national curriculum.

Impact

Our maths curriculum equips our pupils with the functional and transferrable mathematical skills they need for their future lives. This includes the ability to anticipate time, develop an awareness of the value of money and the use of measures. As well as the ability to anticipate and understand position and direction, alongside an understanding of quantity.

Maths learning is assessed through our maths assessment system, which is adapted from the national curriculum and allows small steps of progress to be recorded and celebrated.

Learning is evidenced on Evidence for Learning and is linked to our assessment system and individual pupils Personal Learning Goals (PLG’s).

We work closely with the local maths hub to provide challenge, scrutinise and support in order to drive improvement in our maths curriculum.
