Mill Water School is an all-age special school for pupils with severe and complex learning difficulties, including Autism, located in the grounds of Bicton College. Our beautiful, rural surroundings provide unrivalled opportunities for outdoor learning.

This position in a special school is a key role and we are looking for someone with more than exemplary administration skills, you will also need emotional intelligence and a strong moral compass.

This is an opportunity to make a difference for families – sometimes the most vulnerable. You will need to be kind, positive and hard-working.

You will have the ability to build and form working relationships with pupils, parents and all colleagues and to work across operational boundaries as a member of our very successful school community.

You will need to able to demonstrate a co-operative, reliable “can do” attitude with good communication skills both on the telephone and in person which allows effective communication at all levels of the school.

You will:

  • Act as an ambassador for both the school and the leadership team in all matters, with the capacity to remain calm and to cope with the unexpected;
  • Manage access to the Headteacher, dealing with as many requests as possible independently and screening enquiries;
  • Assist with the organisation, planning and delivery of some school events;
  • Act as the eyes and ears of the Headteacher, being the first point of contact for visitors to the Headteacher;
  • Be patient, flexible, adaptable, meticulous and conscientious;
  • Liaise with tact and diplomacy with other school staff and others outside the school, particularly parents and the local community;
  • Be able to handle sensitive and confidential matters with complete tact and discretion.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This role requires a DBS disclosure. This role requires the ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English.
